Abstract: [fre] La création de la monnaie unique en janvier 1999 a marqué une étape d’une importance considérable dans la construction européenne. En 50 ans, selon un processus démocratique et volontaire, les nations qui composent l’Europe étaient passées d’une Union douanière à une monnaie unique couronnant elle-même le Marché unique européen. Ce papier présente les préparatifs qui ont présidé à la création de la monnaie unique dans leur dimension politique, économique et monétaire. Ensuite, il dresse un bilan des premières années d’existence de la nouvelle monnaie, présentant ses principaux succès et avantages. Enfin, sont exposés les défis qui restent à relever pour pouvoir tirer pleinement profit de la monnaie unique. . The creation of the single currency in January 1999 represented a major step forward in European integration. In just 50 years, the countries comprising Europe democratically elected to advance from a Customs Union to the adoption of a single currency, which in itself was the crowning achievement of the European Single Market. This paper presents the political, economic and monetary preparations leading up to the creation of the single currency. It then takes stock of the new currency’s first years, from the standpoint of its main successes and benefits. Lastly, it expands on the challenges still to be met in order to take full advantage of the single currency. . JEL classification : F33, F36, N24
