Abstract: [fre] Pour mesurer les effets sur le secteur horticole, de l'élargissement de la CEE, il convient d'évaluer le degré d'auto-approvisionnement de la Communauté à neuf et des trois pays, au cours des trois dernières années. . L'autosuffisance existe pour les produits horticoles, sauf la tomate. L'adhésion des trois pays, en satisfaisant la demande communautaire, leur permettrait de résorber leurs surplus de tomates... . Des doutes subsistent : les produits horticoles actuellement produits par l'Europe des neuf peuvent être facilement être remplacés par ceux des autres pays méditerranéens dont 'les coûts de production et de commercialisation sont intérieurs à ceux de la Communauté. Les régions de la CEE où le secteur horticole est le pilier de l'économie agricole, en subiront le contrecoup. Le potentiel de production de l'Italie est important : si la Grèce, d'Espagne et le Portugal entrent dans la CEE, ne prendront-ils pas ila place des régions économiquement et socialement désavantagées de l'Italie du Sud ? [eng] Euro-mediterranean relations — potatoes and vegetables - In order to estimate the consequences on the horticultural sector of Greece, Spain and Portugal being admitted to the EEC, one must evaluate how self-sufficient the Nine and the three countries concerned have been over the past 3 years. . They are self-sufficient with regard to horticulture except for tomatoes. If the three countries join they will be able to use their surplus production of tomatoes by satisfying demand within the EEC. . But there are some misgivings. The horticultural products produced at present by the Nine can be replaced very easily by those of the Mediterranean countries where production and marketing costs are lower than those of the Community. The regions of the EEC where the horticultural sector is a pillar of the agricultural economy will suffer in consequence. Production potential is great in Italy. If Greece, Spain and Portugal join the EEC will they not take the place of regions in Southern Italy that are economically and socially underprivileged ?
