Abstract: [eng] Farm production systems and environment — contradictions and perspectives - In the present social system the choice and implementation of techniques are guided by the degree of profitability of production units. In the immediate future this does not seem threatened by the economic and social costs brought about by environment problems simply because in general these costs are supported by the State or local authorities. It nevertheless seems necessary to estimate these costs accurately and in particular, how much has been destroyed and the ecological consequences of the present development of farming techniques. . In these conditions the social benefit of the dominant farm production systems estimated globally and not on the level of production units may well decrease considerably in the long run. . The critical points reached by the development of these systems both with regard to natural resources management techniques and to global economic and social profitability are such that different production systems that do not reach such critical points can be envisaged. [fre] Dans le système social actuel, la détermination et la mise en œuvre des techniques sont guidées par le niveau de rentabilité des unités de production. Celui-ci, dans l'immédiat, ne semble pas menacé par les coûts économiques et sociaux qu'engendrent les problèmes d'environnement, pour la bonne raison que ces coûts sont en général supportés par l'Etat ou les collectivités publiques. Il apparaît néanmoins nécessaire d'évaluer précisémsnt ces coûts, et en particulier l'ampleur des destructions commises et des conséquences écologiques qu'entraîne l'évolution actuelle des techniques agricoles. . En effet, dans ces conditions, la rentabilité sociale des systèmes de production agricoles dominants, appréciée au niveau global et non à celui des unités de production, risque à terme de décroître fortement. . Les seuils critiques atteints par l'évolution de ces systèmes, tant au plan du mode de gestion des ressources naturelles qu'à celui de la rentabilité économique et sociale globale, sont tels que peuvent être envisagés des systèmes de production différents qui échappent à de tels seuils.
