Abstract: [eng] Costs of dairy production are investigated for herds grouped according to herd size and productive performance. Significant economies of size are found, especially in the use of labour. Optimum herd size is estimated, and it is found that in 1986-7 fewer than 25% of herds had exploited most of their potential economies of size. The implications for dairy policy are discussed. [fre] Cet article analyse les coûts de production laitière de certaines catégories de troupeaux définies selon la taille de l'entreprise laitière et sa performance. De grandes économies d'échelle se manifestent, surtout en ce qui concerne la main-d'œuvre. La taille optimum de troupeau est estimée, et le coût moyen par litre qui caractérise cette taille optimum est identifié. Il se trouve que, en 1986-1987, le coût moyen était près de son minimum théorique pour moins de 25% des troupeaux. Des conclusions pour la politique laitière son tirées.
