Abstract: [eng] Age versus evolution of the business firm . Is it possible that, under certain conditions, the age of the business firm could constitute a valid indicator to explain the évolution of the firm ? The author has gathered empirical evidence on this topic from several pieces of research among which his own fidings on small business companies. Three criteria have been selected to describe what is called here the evolution of the business firm : growth, profitability and stability. The investigation of the first two criteria shows that the performance of the firm decreases as the firm grows older. However, the data indicate that the stability of the firm is postively associated with its age. The scope and the limitations of such findings are debated in the latter part of this article. [fre] L'âge pourrait-il être, sous certaines conditions, une variable explicative de l'évo­lution des entreprises ? Sur ce thème, les résultats d'une recherche empirique (limitée à des petites et moyennes entreprises) sont regroupés avec ceux d'autres travaux. Trois critères d'évolution sont retenus : la croissance, la rentabilité et la sécurité. L'étude des deux premiers fait apparaître une baisse des performances alors que le dernier accuse une amélioration sensible avec l'âge. Quelques éléments de réflexions sur la signification et la portée de ce phénomène sont ensuite présentés.
