Une interprétation de l'effet « Giffen »

Abstract: [eng] The giffen effect ; an interpretation. After having recalled the definition and thé conventional analysis of the Giffen effect, the author shows that this effect can be the result of the determination of the consumer s behavior owing to his budget restraint and a survival frontier, irrelevant of his preferences. The conditions of creation of the Giffen effect are obtained duccessively in the cases of a linear and non linear survival frontier. It is showned that this analysis is compatible with the Marshallian conception of the Giffen effect and that it can be extended to the theory of the demand of goods depending upon their characteristics. [fre] Après avoir rappelé la définition et l'analyse traditionnelle de l'effet Giffen, l'auteur montre que ce dernier peut résulter de la détermination du comportement du consommateur par sa contrainte budgétaire et une frontière de survie indépendamment de ses préférences. Les conditions d'apparition de l'effet Giffen sont obtenues successivement dans les cas d'une frontière de survie linéaire et non linéaire. Il est montré que cette analyse est compatible avec la conception Marshallienne de l'effet Giffen et qu'elle peut être étendue à la théorie de la demande des biens en fonction de leurs caractéristiques.
