Revue Économique, 1980, vol. 31, issue 6, 1081-1104

[eng] The choice of family size and the compatibilite of female workforce. . Participation in the low-income setting.. Allen C. Kelley and Lea Melo Da Silva. In the low-income setting, many women find workforce participation and childrearing to be quite compatible. Using data from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, it is shown that women employed in occupations « compatible » with childrearing tend to have larger famïlies than women who are employed in occupations which are « competitive » with childrearing. Systematic changes in occupational structures associated with economic development can be expected to have an attenuating effect on average family size.
