Abstract: [fre] Chez les ménages à bas revenu, de nombreuses femmes arrivent à concilier l'ac­tivité économique et l'éducation des enfants. Sur la base de données en provenance de Belo Horizonte (Brésil), les auteurs montrent que les femmes engagées dans des professions dites « compatibles » avec l'éducation des enfants ont tendance à avoir une famille plus nombreuse que celles engagées dans des professions dites « en compétition » avec l'éducation des enfants. Il faut s'attendre à ce que des modifications systématiques des structures professionnelles reliées au développement économique aient un effet d'atténuation sur la dimension familiale moyenne. In the low-income setting, many women find workforce participation and childrearing to be quite compatible. Using data from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, it is shown that women employed in occupations « compatible » with childrearing tend to have larger famïlies than women who are employed in occupations which are « competitive » with childrearing. Systematic changes in occupational structures associated with economic development can be expected to have an attenuating effect on average family size.
