Abstract: [fre] Cet article s'interroge sur l'origine des mouvements de multinationalisation européens aux Etats-Unis, qui constituent le fait le plus remarquable de l'orientation récente des investissements directs internationaux. Il examine tout d'abord les différentes explications de ce phénomène, fondées sur la notion d'investissements croisés. A partir d'une analyse empirique, il montre ensuite que les investissements européens et américains possèdent des caractéristiques très différentes dont l'appréhension nécessite l'abandon d'une approche en termes de « croisement ». Enfin, il propose une explication nouvelle qui place la dimension temporelle et dynamique de la concurrence au centre du processus de long terme qui a conduit à l'implantation européenne Outre-Atlantique. This article wonders about the origins of the spreading of European Multinational Firms in the USA, that is the most remarkable feature of the recent trend of international direct investissement. First, it examines the explanations of that phenomenon, based on the notion of cross-investments. Starting with an ampirical analysis, it then shows that european and US investments have very different caracterisees, the apprehension of which requires one to give up the cross-investments approach. Lastly, it offers a new explanation which sets, the temporal and dynamic dimension of competition, at the center of the long term process, which led to the european foot hold across the. Atlantic.
