Abstract: [eng] The assumptions controversy in the 1870's. The purpose of this paper is to present one aspect of the english "Battle on Method" between the Historical School and the last representatives of the Ricardian Political Economy, reformulated by J.S. Mill. One of the main points of the historist reaction was the principle of economic behaviour chosen by the ricardians as psychological premise of economic reasoning. Their critique aimed at demonstrating the irrealism of the beha­vioural assumption and therefore, the invalidity of the theoretical constructions built upon it. The historicists missed the opportunity to deconsolidate Political Economy, and the ricardians succeeded to overcome this criticism by emphasizing the abstract charac­ter of economic theory. [fre] Nous nous proposons de présenter ici un aspect du conflit méthodologique entre l'école historique anglaise et les derniers représentants de l'Économie politi­que ricardienne, reformulée par John Stuart Mill. L'école historique avait choisi comme cible de sa critique méthodologique le principe du comportement écono­mique que les ricardiens avaient retenu comme prémisse psychologique du rai­sonnement économique. Cette critique voulait démontrer surtout l'irréalisme de l'hypothèse du comportement et, par conséquent, l'invalidité des constructions théoriques qui en sont déduites. Les historicistes ont manqué l'occasion de déconsolider l'Économie politique et les ricardiens ont réussi à surmonter cette cri­tique tout en réaffirmant le caractère abstrait de la théorie économique.
