Revue Économique, 1997, vol. 48, issue 3, 471-480

Abstract: [eng] This paper studies the role of public capital, of trade protection, and of the availability of skilled labour as explanatory factors of total factor productivity in the manufacturing industry of Senegal. Special emphasis is given to external economies as a factor of productivity improvement, as well as to the potential role of public investment in infrastructure in encouraging the emergence of such externalities. The weakness of public investment in infrastructure and the high level of trade protection account for a large part of the declining trend in total factor productivity. Falling productivity appears in turn to have contributed to the overvaluation of the real exchange rate of Senegal before 1994.
