Abstract: [eng] This article deals with two important monetary controversies in England at the end of the seventeenth century, the debate on the level of interest and the problem of recoinage. It elaborates upon Locke's position. We aim to show that Locke's argumentation cannot be interpreted as favourable to a nascent economic liberalism. In our opinion, Locke's economic writings can only be understood in the light of his political and social philosophy. The task of the government is to guarantee the stability of the social and political order by an appropriate economic policy. [fre] Ce texte propose de revenir sur les deux controverses monétaires majeures de la fin du XVII siècle anglais, le débat sur le niveau des taux d'intérêt et la question de la refonte des monnaies, et d'expliciter les prises de position de Locke. Nous montrerons que l'argumentaire développé par celui-ci ne peut être interprété comme allant dans le sens du libéralisme économique naissant. Les options économiques de Locke ne se comprennent, à notre avis, que si on les replace dans le prolongement de sa philosophie politique et sociale. La tâche du Gouvernement Civil est de garantir, par une politique économique appropriée, la stabilité de l'ordre social et politique.
