Abstract:
[eng] Foreign direct investment and export performance : an empirical analysis of french firms. . Considering the substitution-complementarity debate on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and exports, the objective of the analysis is to compare firms' export behaviour according to the geographical zone of trade and foreign direct investment.. Most theories generally show that substitution effects are stronger than complementarity effects. FDI is also considered as an alternative to exports.. Yet, empirical analyses are the opposite (Lipsey & Weiss, 1981, 1984, Swedenborg, 1979 and Fontagne, 1996). While setting a gravity model, our interest is to differentiate export performance of firms with or without a foreign operation in the country towards which they export.. We find that the existence of a foreign operation acts, on the whole, favorably on exports, nevertheless this varies by zone.
