Abstract:
(Based on a critique of the notion of “inequity aversion” the phenomenon of situation-specific moral behavior is explained with the help of a moral cognitive theory that explains moral functioning in terms of different stages that are activated according to situational affordances and constraints. In this way it is possible to explain why and how situation-specific adaptation comes about and what the inherent rationality of it is. The analysis is based on the so-called „happy victimizer” phenomenon, which is well known in moral psychology and describes a behavioral pattern that is generally considered as immoral. However, as will be shown, it may – in certain situations – be rational and also fair to follow this course of action.)
