(The article aims to assess the paradigm of social entitlements based on employability, designed to be the new pattern of European welfare states, against the capability approach as initiated by Amartya Sen. This paradigm makes out of professional development a central dimension and out of the enterprise, as the place for the exercise and development of professional skills, a core player. A first step consists to analyze, on the basis of an exemplary case study, the different forms of participation which are required for professional development based on capabilities at the workplace. A second step highlights, under the viewpoint of the issues of responsibility and principles of justice, the tensions that arise between individual and collective forms of participation, when a company seeks to foster employees’ capabilities.)
