Agricultural Globalization in Developing Countries

J. Mohan Rao and Servaas Storm

QA - Rivista dell'Associazione Rossi-Doria, 2003, issue 2

Abstract: This paper investigates the process of agricultural globalisation in developing countries subsequent to the structural adjustment and stabilisation programs as well as the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture. The first part discerns patterns in trade flows, price movements and changes in the growth of value added, productivity and labour absorption for the 1960-1990 period. The second part aims at connecting these patterns with the neo-liberal policies. The evidence on trade flows indicates increased agricultural globalisation in developing economies coinciding with the policy regime shift. However, increased trade flows have not been accompanied by relative prices convergence. The analyses of the struc tural relations North/South, industry/agriculture, private/public investments, small farms/multinational corporations suggest that the effects of globalisation are more consonant with a structuralist understanding of global trade vis-à-vis a neoliberal one.
