Approaches, Hopes and Reality in Transition Economies

Pasquale Tridico and Maria Lissowska

QA - Rivista dell'Associazione Rossi-Doria, 2010, issue 4

Abstract: More than twenty years have now passed since the fall of the Berlin wall. Transition from planned economy towards market economy was supposed to bring success in both democracy and economic development. However, many transition economies have not become richer yet, nor more democratic, and fundamental cleavages among transition paths can be observed. The relatively better transition of most of the Central and Eastern European Countries than of the former Soviet Republics, in both economic and political terms, can be explained on the basis of different levels of social capital, trust, civil society involvement, transformation strategies, labour market performance and changes, and the emergence of a middle class, leading to different levels of democracy and development.
