Rural Areas and Agricultural Holdings in China: What Has Changed Within Ten Years from the 1996 to the 2006?

Roberto Fanfani and Nica Claudia Calò

QA - Rivista dell'Associazione Rossi-Doria, 2011, issue 4

Abstract: The aim of this article is to outline the main effects of the 1978 agricultural reform and the consequent shift from collective land utilization to family household management (Household Responsibility System). Specific focus will be on the structural changes occurring in rural areas and on the significant differences among the rural areas in all the Chinese provinces. We will investigate the relevance of these structural changes and their effects on both rural and urban areas. The analysis will be based on data from the first (1996) and second (2006) national agricultural census of China.
