Agricultural Insurances in Italy: Current Evolution and Future Prospect in Light of the Forthcoming CAP Reform

Simone Severini and Claudia Cupidi

QA - Rivista dell'Associazione Rossi-Doria, 2012, issue 4

Abstract: Considering that risk management can improve the competitiveness of agricultural enterprises, since 2009 the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has introduced measures to support certain risk management tools, including agricultural insurance. The recent CAP reform proposals suggest shifting them into the rural development policies and introducing a new income stabilization tool. This article analyzes the recent positive evolution of the agricultural insurance business in Italy, highlighting the fact that it is not very widespread, especially in central and southern Italy. Furthermore, it discusses the opportunities and limitations of the CAP reform proposals in this sector.
