Abstract:
Interest in rural development in Europe is shown by the lively debate arising subsequent to the beginning of 2007-2013 programming. The policies implemented so far have been constrained by narrow definitions inappropriate for adequate characterization. The aim of this study is a critical discussion of the evolution of the idea of what is rural, understood as a both physical and socio-economic area, which can be described with several variables. The empirical analysis applied to the situation in Tuscany uses cluster analysis for the identification of "rural areas" and their characterization according to the role played within the process of economic development.
