Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the role played by foreign direct investments (FDI) in the restructuring of some Central and Eastern European economies with special emphasis on Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. While it is generally accepted that FDI have had a positive impact on host Central and Eastern European (CEE) economies during the last 20 years and have contributed to the economic growth of the respective countries it is less obvious what really explains the differences in the volumes of FDI attracted by these countries. It is also of interest how can we measure the impact of FDI on the respective economies in order to obtain meaningful information for the design of effective economic policies that can support further growth.
