Abstract: This study is an attempt to examine the health-poverty nexus using panel data of 126 countries for 1990-2014. Poverty headcount ratio and poverty gap are used to measure poverty, and health is measured by life expectancy and infant mortality. The results confirm that poverty has an adverse effect on health. The findings discovered that the coefficients obtained using the poverty gap are bigger in magnitude as compared to the coefficients obtained using the headcount ratio. The system GMM confirms the robustness of the findings. This study suggests that programs to improve public health should not focus only on policies which foster economic growth but also on policies which help to decrease poverty.
