Abstract: What Future for the Universal Bank? An Empirical Analysis Applied to the Euro Area. The universal bank’s model, characterized notably by its profitability in prosperity periods, takes a new look owing to the contribution of certain financial intermediaries in the financial instability. In this perspective, this article aims on one hand at making a synthetic presentation of the main characteristics of the model in Europe with certain national peculiarities and on the other hand at making an analysis of favourable and disadvantageous arguments to the assertion of the model. Finally, this article offers a cogitation on its future and on the possible improvments to be brought. Résumé – Le modèle de banque universelle, caractérisé notamment par sa profitabilité en périodes de prospérité, est aujourd’hui remis en cause en raison de la contribution de certains intermédiaires financiers à l’instabilité financière. Dans cette perspective, cet article vise d’une part à faire une présentation synthétique des principales caractéristiques du modèle de banque universelle en Europe tout en faisant ressortir des spécificités nationales et d’autre part à faire une analyse des arguments favorables et défavorables au maintien du modèle. Enfin, il propose une réflexion sur son avenir et sur les améliorations possibles à y apporter.
