Abstract: This paper examines theoretical issues on financial control mechanisms and local government constitutional performance in Nigeria. The paper reviewed on a qualitative methodology works of renowned researches, writers and authors on the subject matter in order to identify areas of divergence and convergence of views. Financial control mechanism has been the major apparatus of accessing constitutional performance of local government over the years in Nigeria. This paper articulated the various control mechanisms in the local government sector and also underpinned the theoretical framework based on efficiency theory to back up the study. The study recommends that the issue of financial control mechanisms in local government should not be relaxed, relevant offices in charge of the controls should be strengthened, sound management team should be constituted in the local government to act as watch dog: and that there should be change of values, attitude and perception of the people towards controls put in place to promote performance.
