Abstract: This study surveys U.S. manufacturing intra-industry trade with 12 countries along the Asian Pacific Rim during the period 1990-2003. While the U.S. total trade with China grew by 802% surpassing the rest of APR countries, we see a negative growth of 1.64% in manufacturing intra-industry trade. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand also see a negative growth in manufacturing intra-industry trade during this period. Indonesia has the greatest growth of 129.30%, and Taiwan the least at 15.19%, in manufacturing intraindustry trade. The growth varies in different countries - New Zealand 88.76%, Australia 61.90%, Philippines 42.17%, South Korea 25.28%, and Japan 17.99%. In summary, inter-industry trade remained dominant over manufacturing intraindustry trade in most APR countries’ bilateral trade with the U.S. During the period of 1990-2003, U.S. intra-industry trade with most of the APR countries has increased or maintained stable except with Hong Kong and Thailand.
