Abstract:
This paper makes a quantitative assessment of exports contribution to the economic growth of Taiwan. Using a model developed to decompose the “sources of industrial growth” from the demand side and Taiwan’s Input-Output Tables of 1964, 1966, 1971, 1976 and 1981 one can estimate the contribution of manufactured exports to growth of output and employment. This study confirms that exports helped Taiwan to achieve rapid industrialization during the 1 960s and 1 970s by increasing domestic output and by creating productive employment. The results have policy implications and also suggest that export-led industrialization may allow greater access to world markets as well as help developing countries to take advantage of factor endowments without being subjected to demand constraints.
