Abstract:
This article reexamines the causative relationship between export growth and industrial development. Unlike its predecessors, the present paper includes a measure of the extent of development using the ratio of currency to money supply. A vector autoregressive technique incorporating South Korean annual data on real GDP, real exports, manufacturing output, and the degree of development, has been employed. Most variables proved to possess bidirectional causality. However, contrary to popular belief, the exports-manufacturing causal relationship has been found to be only indirect via the development variable.
