Abstract: This study analyses the role of managers in economic development and the importance of the public sector in the Indian Economy during the period of planned development sine 1951-52. The performance of the public sector in terms of fiscal deficit, profitability of public enterprises and other aspects has been examined. The reasons for managerial inefficiency have been illustrated and the courses of action to improve public sector performance and managerial efficiency outlined.
