Abstract: Keynes’ General Theory has been without a doubt the most disputed and controversial work in economics of the past century. As is well known, Keynesian ideas spread quickly throughout the world, immediately raising quite deep and long lasting controversies on theoretical as well as on political grounds. The aim of this paper, written in honour of Professor Vittorio Sirotti, is to analyze briefly the way in which Keynes’ General Theory was interpreted by some outstanding economists across the Atlantic, that is, in the United States and in Europe from the 1940s until the 1960s, and then compare these interpretations with that presented by Professor Vittorio Sirotti in his crystal clear Lectures Notes, published in the mid-1960s. This far more refined interpretation is still fresh and worthy of great consideration, in the opinion of the writer, especially in these present confusing times of global economic crisis. - La Teoria Generale di Keynes è stato senza dubbio il lavoro più dibattuto e controverso del secolo scorso nell’ambito dell’Economia. Come è noto, le idee keynesiane si diffusero rapidamente in tutto il mondo, dando luogo a controversie assai profonde e prolungate sia sul piano teorico che su quello politico. Scopo del presente saggio, scritto in onore del professor Vittorio Sirotti, è quello di analizzare brevemente il modo in cui la Teoria Generale di Keynes venne interpretata da alcuni eminenti economisti sulle due sponde dell’Atlantico, cioè a dire, negli Stati Uniti e in Europa dagli anni ’40 agli anni ’60, e confrontare poi queste interpretazioni con quella fornita dal Professor Sirotti nei suoi brillantissimi Appunti dalle Lezioni di Economia Politica, pubblicati nella metà degli anni ’60. Quest’ultima interpretazione, secondo l’autore del saggio, è di gran lunga la più raffinata e mantiene ancora la sua freschezza e la sua utilità, soprattutto nell’attuale periodo di grande confusione e di crisi economica globale.
