Abstract: This paper provides a review of the development of the banking sector in the UAE. It also investigates empirically the performance of the underlying sector in terms of risk of default and competiveness. The results based on the Altman’s (1968, 2000) Z-score test show that the banking industry in the UAE can be considered as safe and the risk of default is insignificant. In addition, the results obtained by using the Panzar and Rosse (1987) model indicate that the market structure in the banking sector can be characterized by a monopolistic behavior. The reason for this empirical finding seems to be related to the underlying institutional factors. - Questo studio effettua un’analisi dello sviluppo del sistema bancario negli Emirati Arabi. Viene altresì svolta un’indagine empirica sulla performance di questo settore in termini di rischio fallimento e competitività. I risultati – basati sul test Z-score di Altman (1968, 2000) – mostrano che l’attività bancaria negli Emirati Arabi può essere considerata sicura e che il rischio di fallimento è insignificante. Inoltre, dai risultati ottenuti dall’applicazione del modello di Panzar e Rosse (1987) si evince che la struttura del mercato bancario è caratterizzata da comportamento monopolistico. La ragione di questi risultati sembra attribuibile a fattori istituzionali.
