Abstract:
State of mind characteristic of the social relationship, paternalism finds its legitimacy in the paternal authority. It invests the economic world in the Middle Ages (corporations) and the capitalist company at the beginning of the 19th Century. Multiform concept, it materializes by social instiutions for employee (« du berceau a la tombe ») and aims to moralise the personnel of the company in its professional life as well as in its private life. Social Policy of « avant-garde », but become pejorative at the 20th Century, it takes new appearance under the term of citizen company, then ethical company and finally socially responsible company. Its methods of action change however with the development of the Welfare state.
