The varying fortunes of the project of mathematising economics: an evolutionary explanation

Abstract: The modern discipline of economics is dominated by a project whose contributors mostly insist that methods of mathematical-deductivist modelling be everywhere utilised. Few attempts to justify this stance are made. Meanwhile this mathematising project appears not to be especially successful, certainly not more so than rival approaches and traditions. Here, then, we have an explanatory puzzle. Why or how did economics get into this situation, and how does it persist? This question is addressed in the following essay.
