Abstract:
The main form of land use in the Biu region has long been shifting cultivation and livestock grazing. However, the area is experiencing intensified land use/ land cover changes resulting from extensive clearance for cultivation, settlements and urban development. This study sought to investigate the impact of land use/ land cover dynamics on vegetation cover amongst other land and environmental resources in the study area. The study utilized satellite imageries of the study area to carry out the land use/land cover analysis for a 15 year period (2000-2015) in the GIS environment using Arc GIS 9.3 software. The identified land use categories viz, built-up area, water bodies, cultivated land, scrubland, forested land and bare surface were subjected to chi square analysis to test if there was significant change in the land use/land cover classes between 2000 and 2015. The result of the study showed that changes in the extent of the area eof the land use/land cover from 2000-2015 increase on some of the land use/land cover which includes an increase of about 2.69% in built-up area, 1.96% of water bodies, 13.26% in cultivated land and 7.78% of bare surface with a decrease of 13.09% in forest area and 12.6 % in scrubland. The result of the chi square analysis showed that changes in land use/ land cover classes were significant at (P
