YOUTH VIOLENCE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN BABOKO COMMUNITY OF ILORIN, KWARA STATE NIGERIA

Abstract: Youth violence is one of the major problems facing most societies in Nigeria today and it has contributed to the level of insecurity witnessed in recent times. Baboko community of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria happens to be one of the center stages of youth violence in Ilorin, and the effect of this violence is mostly on social and economic condition of the community. The study, therefore, investigates youth violence and socio-economic development in Baboko community of Ilorin, Kwara State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to collect data from the study participants. 200 respondents were randomly selected using quantitative method while in-depth interviews (IDI) were carried out for 15 participants. The quantitative data was analyzed using a simple percentage of mean, while qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. Findings reveal that drug use, peer pressure, poverty, unemployment and cultism are the major factors influencing youth violence in the community. The study recommends that the community should operate jointly with the police in their strategy of violence prevention, empower police with weapons and infrastructures, including social workers and psychologists in the rehabilitation of suspects and offenders and creation of more jobs for teeming youth by the government..
