Abstract: The study was carried out to investigate forensic accounting techniques as tools for fraud mitigation. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. A total of 89 accountants in both the Federal and State owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria were studied. Two research questions guided the study while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument titled Forensic Accounting Techniques Questionnaire (FATEQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts. Kuder Richardson formula (KR-21) was used to determine the internal consistency of the items. Areliability coefficient of 0.74 was obtained. The results of the data collected and analysed indicated that forensic accounting techniques mitigate fraud in terms of asset misappropriation and fraudulent disbursements. The results of the test of null hypotheses revealed a non-significant difference in the mean ratings of the respondents on the impact of forensic accounting techniques on fraud mitigation with respect to asset misappropriation and fraudulent disbursements in tertiary institutions based on their educational qualifications and years of experience. It was however recommended among others, Officers in charge of finance of tertiary institutions be mandated to employ forensic accounting techniques as this will ensure reduction or elimination of fraudulent practices.
