Abstract: In spite that education is recognized as an important factor for reducing poverty and inequality, there has been little research on how the access to roads can hinder the provision of this service in the most remote and needy areas for teachers in the country. The presence of trunked roads has a negative and significant relationship with food poverty and educational gap using data from 2005 and 2010. These findings suggest that the spending on highways should consider this type of infrastructure to compensate the unfavorable conditions in which more than 45 percent of the population in Mexico lives.
