Abstract: Small and medium-sized business is an important component of economic activity, its development and support depend on increasing the competitiveness of the industry, increasing tax revenues to the state budget, providing social protection and welfare of the population. The main problem is that despite the positive dynamics of the development of small and mediumsized enterprises in the national economy, enterprises still face many difficulties and barriers. In the course of the research general scientific methods were used: on the basis of scientific abstraction the analysis of the main indicators of the dynamics of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia was carried out; the method of data comparison was used; the dynamics and structure of the main indicators characterizing the importance of small and mediumsized businesses in the national economy were described by means of graphical interpretation of data and the method of their grouping. It was revealed that in Russia there was a positive dynamics of development of small and medium-sized businesses, but in 2019 there were noticeable deterioration, as the tax burden on these enterprises is still high, and the adverse impact of administrative barriers. By the way, the activities of Russian small and medium-sized enterprises are not aimed at the introduction of various innovations in contrast to the developed countries, they are also involved in the shadow economy, this leads to the fact that the data related to the economy are unreliable. All this is facilitated by illegal employment, prosperity of the bureaucracy, non-compliance with labor legislation. Based on the analysis of the main statistical indicators characterizing the activities of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia, the conclusions about the current trends in the development of small and medium-sized businesses, identified promising areas of state support for small and medium-sized businesses. The prospect of development of small and mediumsized businesses, according to the national project, by 2024 should increase to a third, which will have a beneficial effect on the economic market of Russia, will allow it to reach a more qualitative level.
