Abstract: Many complex, ambitious and innovative industrial activities are organized in projects. Yet, in spite of professional project management education, projects often do not reach their goals within time and budget. This raises the question of "gaps" between project management education and real project management demands. Three well-known project management frameworks, PRINCE2®, PMBOK, and ICB IPMA, were analysed empirically. Hypotheses were derived by comparing general project management requirements with the frameworks. 156 international project managers and trainers answered questions about problems in projects, project management frameworks used, and perceived benefits and shortcomings. Main issues not covered by the frameworks referred to communication and interpersonal skills, general problem solving skills and flexibility, and change/ risk management and monitoring/ controlling. There are differences between the frameworks too. The results suggest that problem based learning should be emphasized more in project management education.
