Abstract: Unfortunately, in today's economy it made in the evaluation of recent experience to settle for standard, publicly available data. With rare exceptions, cross-country studies of financial crises are based on data from 1980 and are limited on many other important parameters. This is despite the fact that an event that may seem unprecedented in scale three decades, in the broader context appears not so exceptional.
