The entry of foreign capital in the Russian banking system: the question of the admission of branches

Abstract:
In recent years, some emerging markets have reduced the limits on foreign direct investment in their financial systems, allowing the entry of foreign banks in the form of both subsidiaries and branches. As a result, the share of foreign ownership in the banking systems of these countries has increased significantly. International practice shows that the increase in the share of foreign bank capital through: (a) the purchase of existing shares in the banks, (b) the opening of a subsidiary bank, (c) the opening of a branch of a foreign bank.
