Professional societies in American science: a rewarding experience for Russia?

Abstract:
The article analyzes the activities of American scientific societies and associations as the institutional elements of civil society in science. It focuses on forms of interaction with society executive and legislative power, techniques evaluation. We have described the recent history of the revival of Russian scientific societies and defined the elements of the American experience, which can be used in Russia.
