Abstract: The review of the key indicators of the global scientific and technological ecosystem development, updated in 2018, is carried out to determine the important trends and focuses for Russia. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that the share of the business sector in industrialized countries is becoming a major source of R & D funding. In the Russian Federation, total R & D investments by all Russian industrial companies in 2016 amounted to €8.39 billion in PPP terms, which is less than the 2016 budget of each individual company included in the top 10 rankings of the European Commission “EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard”. The domestic expenditure on research and development in the Russian Federation in 2015 were lower than the combined corporate budgets of three companies in the world: Volkswagen, Alphabet and Microsoft.
