Abstract: The crucial factor for increasing the export potential of the Russian regions is the existence of an effective system of regional institutions, which creates an enabling environment for export activities. This article proposes a theoretical model of the institutional mechanism for increasing the region’s export potential. The definition of the economic category “export potential of the region” is given from the position of its essential content and structural framework. It is proved that the export potential of the region includes a set of interconnected elements (potentials), which together constitute the basis for the implmentation and development of export activities. The institutional mechanism is presented as a flexible adaptive system of interacting organizational elements - external, internal and border, allowing to ensure the comprehensive development of exports in the region.
