Abstract: This article describes the concept and specifics of the influence of sports, analyzes the relationship between politics and sports. It was revealed that sports and sporting events actively influence the formation and develop-ment of the political potential of the state. In addition, the article notes that sport can be considered on the basis of four characteristics of the impact on the development of the state. One of the most significant characteristics at the present stage of social development is sports – as an instrument of “soft power”. The article identifies the positive and negative characteristics of sports as an instrument of “soft power” on the territory of the Russian state.
