Abstract: The article reveals the essence of the political system, analyzes theoretical directions and approaches to understanding the phenomenon of the political system. Their analysis showed that in the theories of political systems, developed mainly by Western science, there is a multivariability of understanding and interpretation of its essence, genesis and development trends, various theoretical and worldview approaches. At the same time, it is necessary to note the predominance of institutional consideration of the essence and structure of political systems. It is noted that domestic science also prefers insti-tutional and systemic approaches to the study of political systems of our time. The article identifies and analyzes the Russian features of the transformation and modernization of the political system.
