Abstract: One of the acute problems of the modern development of Russia is the uneven development of territorial entities. The proposed study examines the existing problems in spatial development that do not meet the national interests of the country. The purpose of the study is to focus the attention of public authorities at the federal, regional and local levels on the existence of imbalances in the economic, social, and cultural development of territories and regions that do not protect the national and economic interests of Russia. It is noted that the existing spatial development strategy does not ensure the sustainable development of regions and a direct link between space and economic security has been identified. New approaches are proposed in the spatial development of the country in order to ensure economic security. The results of the study can be used by public authorities in strategic planning.
