Abstract: The article consider the cultural and historical basis of the forms of agonalism. The author puts forward and substantiates the idea that competition (agonal), which is based on the socalled “agonal instinct” in literature, takes various forms throughout the history of culture, the basis of which is the basic and characteristic features of culture and civilization in which there are specific forms of agonality. It is shown that the forms of agonality most closely correspond to the spiritual culture of the society and are inextricably linked to the entire structure of society and the foundations of culture. The definition of agonality is clarified; the author shows its difference from competition game forms. The article may be of interest to philosophers, cultural scientists, sociologists, as well as to all who are interested in the place and role of sport in modern culture.
