EVOLUTION AND OUTLOOK OF ENTITIES ALONG THE ELECTRICITY SECTOR VALUE CHAIN IN ROMANIA

Alexandru Maxim and Teodora Roman

Proceedings of the INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE, 2019, vol. 13, issue 1, 658-665

Abstract: Over the last two decades, the Romanian electricity market has followed the trend set by Western European countries along the path of breaking up state owned monopolies, privatization and, ultimately, liberalization along much of the electricity sector’s value chain. This paper seeks to provide an overview of how this transition has been achieved, with particular focus on the last decade, after the country joined the European Union and implemented significant reforms in the sector, including support schemes for electricity generation based on renewable sources. As a result of these changes, the most dynamic components of the value chain have been supply and generation. Of particular interest is the emerging trend of active competition in the household consumer segment, which has traditionally been served by the regional monopolies of the default electricity suppliers. By analyzing market reports, other research and legislation, an outlook for this dynamic market structure and for the entities active in the sector is proposed.
