ROMANIA AND THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMIES IN THE EUROPEAN UNION: STATUS, PROGRESS AND EFFECTS

Abstract: The present analysis is based on the assumption that the 8 indicators included in the Europe 2020 Strategy for building knowledge economies across Europe can be resumed to one or maximum two synthetic indicators, by performing a Principal Components Analysis, and so clusters of countries can be shown, according to how close each country is to the optimal level of each indicator. Consequently, this paper presents the dynamic evolution of the European countries for the past three years and shows their progress or lack of progress from this point of view. One of the main results shows the current three groups of countries from the point of view of creating the new economies in the European Union. The analysis emphasises the position of Romania, its transit throughtout the European Union and the other knowledge economies and underlines certain important key point for the future. This study is relevant for managers in the Romanian companies, scientists and social analysts, and even political decision making factors, because it shows the cause-effect relation that lead to Romania standing where it stands today.
