Abstract:
The discovery of the physiological responses to the intermittent training goes back about 60 years ago, with the 1960 publications of Astrand and colleagues. But the interval training method has appeared in the training methodology since the 1940’s. Even today, despite of the large number of available researches about the method, little has been done to meet the needs of those who train athletes on the field. It is the classic gap between the theory and practice. In this article are explained the reasons for this gap, starting from the physiological foundations of this approach, then understanding of the significant differences to the other methods, and the conclusions that are able to provide practical indications for use, both in endurance sports and team sports.
