Abstract: Thirty years ago, the economist Gary Becker presented an economic theory of the marriage market and the family that generated a new research field within economics. This article briefly summarizes two strands of literature that owe their intellectual debt to the pioneering contribution of Becker. First, we analyze the effects of the differential fertility of men and women on the marriage and the labor markets. Second, we study the intergenerational transfers at the time of marriage that occurred in many past civilizations and still characterize some developing countries nowadays
